How to Choose Your Wedding Colors

The colors you choose for your wedding will help set the mood and can work well with your theme.

Winter Theme Weddings

For winter theme weddings, snow white, platinum and cranberry look magical. Add touches of deep berry colors to your accessories and drape the bridesmaids in thick , dark red velvet shawls. Bouquets can be made with both white and red roses with sprigs of berry twigs and crystal stems.

Try to stay clear of traditional Christmas colors - forest green, bright red and brass. Select colors that remind you of a winter's day.

Other colors that are reminiscent of winter:

  • Aubergine or eggplant
  • Evergreen grey-green
  • Black
  • Light rose

Beach Weddings

Select natural colors that compliment the sea such as taupe, silver and aqua. Bridesmaids can be dressed in aquamarine silk dresses with crystal and pearl chokers. Bouquets can be simple with curly willow, and vanilla roses.

Capture the feeling by using shells and sand in your centerpieces. Some other colors that work well for a beach them wedding:

  • Chocolate
  • Buttercup yellow
  • Sunset colors - rust, dark red, maze

Evening Weddings

While shiny, brassy golds are not in fashion, antiqued golds are. Antiqued, soft golds go well with creamy ivory and soft, dusted rose. A deep burgundy can be used as an accent. Look to traditional Indian wedding costume for inspiration. Embroidered golden thread with tiny pearls and crystals - there is nothing more elegant.

Classic silver and ice blue work well agains a pitch black canopy of stars.

Renaissance Weddings and Medieval Theme

If you are having a renaissance theme wedding, dark colors and thick fabrics work well. Perhaps a lavish brocade or velvet? Deep colors such as forest green, burgundy, royal blue and red work great for renaissance wedding themes.

Hawaiian or Tropical Theme

Navy blue with white and yellow floral accents look lovely. Choose tropical colors like aqua, blue and bright red. The colors mentioned above under "Beach Weddings" will also work well.

Asian Theme Weddings - Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese Weddings

For Chinese or Vietnamese weddings, choose golds, reds and bright blues.

For a Japanese theme wedding, think utra-zen with stone grey, sage green and bark brown. Use the colors of seasonal orchids like hot purple and fuschia.

White, red, purple and turquoise. Use brightly colored tropical flowers like orchids and bright red roses.

sam -- Saturday, February 22 2003, 03:19 am

love that burnt orange! Looks beautiful on bridesmaids and tulips etc. Look for vibrant colors that compliment... bright purple, white, orange/yellow/red.

i need help. There are many colors I like but I do not want to be like everyone else and I am afraid if I choose what I want that I will be laughed at. I am getting remarried after ten years. In the month of June in Texas and would like yellow for the color but I would like daisies for the flowers with some ivy in there somewhere. Does that sound stupid? But I am afraid I need more than yellow that is just blah by itself don't you think? Email me litebrite575@yahoo.com

Cortney -- Thursday, April 24 2003, 08:45 am

I am getting married on January 31st, 2004. We want an evening wedding, perhaps with a star theme. I have thought about using the following colors, but can't seem to figure out what flowers would work best with the color, theme, and time of day. The colors I have thought of are: Navy blue, Dark green, Red, or wine - each accented with silver (or platinum since that's what are rings are made of). If you have any suggestions, I sure would like to hear them. My email address is cortmcd@yahoo.com. Thanks!

I would love to hear from anyone who can find time to respond. My email address is tatikita@aol.com.

Kenya -- Monday, May 5 2003, 11:20 am

My fiance and I are trying to decide on our wedding colors. I want sky blue and he wants green. Is there a light or pastel green that would look good with sky blue or some other type of blue? Please help. My email adress is skenya@hotmail.com. Thank you.

Tabitha -- Tuesday, May 6 2003, 09:02 pm

Kenya, I think that celadon would look really pretty with a light/sky blue. I am having celadon and was considering a lilac or lavender with it. But I think maybe a pastel blue would work great! tabbis@adelphia.net

Tabitha -- Tuesday, May 6 2003, 09:06 pm

This comment is to Lily. My original plans were for a fall/autumn wedding and I was considering a dark red, such as burgendy or black for my bridesmaid's dresses. Not only because they are autumn colors but they are very slimming as well. For the bouquets I was considering using rusty oranges, brown, burgendy's. With gerbera daisies, mums, fall leaves and maybe some pinecones and berries thrown here and there. For the reception I decided on giving candied apples as a favor and hollowing pumpkins to put mums in as centerpieces. I even thought it would have been neat to carve hearts in a few and light them to make it more romantic.

I need help with trying to find stuff like colors of the wedding...themes...just a cheap little wedding is all we need.

catherine -- Thursday, May 22 2003, 01:11 pm

Don't focus on "colors" Instead, look at sample flower arrangements and use a pallet that is pleasing to your eye. Get together with your bridesmaids to select a color from the pallet for their dresses.I hate seeing weddings that look like a prom with school theme colors. You don't want someone rememering your baby blue wedding!

Kathy -- Tuesday, May 27 2003, 11:06 am

I am getting married in late September and I decided on cranberry and pumpkin for my colors. The girls' dresses are a deep red and they will carry roses in shades of deep red and orange. They're fallish colors, but also late summerish as it may still be warm.

Penny -- Tuesday, May 27 2003, 04:55 pm

I think a great color scheme for a wedding would be the traditional pure white dress (maybe not traditionally cut) and the brides maid could wear a light blue and the flower girls could wear dark blue with pure white ribbons incorporated (in hair or something) That same scheme could be incorporated into a vest for the groom and I think a star or winter theme reception

Jessica -- Wednesday, May 28 2003, 03:13 pm

Would navy blue and yellow be a good combination of colors for a summer wedding?

Nicol -- Friday, May 30 2003, 02:14 am

Navy is traditionally a fall/winter color. You might think of a lighter shade of blue or another color.

Chantel -- Sunday, June 1 2003, 11:04 pm

I am getting married in May and I have always dreamed of a red and white wedding. I do not want this to look like it is Valentines day. I thought about accenting the colors with orange, yellow and peach but my I am a little scared that those colors will look bad together. How can I make a red and white wedding not look like the most romantic holdiay or are there pictures of a colorful wedding in those colors that look tasteful? My wedding in the spring of 2003. Its relatively informal and I'm looking for colors that will be fun--but not obnoxious. I've seen some mags with pictures that use a hot pink & tangerine type color. I like the thought of it, but am afraid people will just remember it as blinding! Any ideas??

We are have a June 2004 wedding. The colors in our reception hall are rose and burgandy. My bridesmaids dresses and going to be champange. I don't have my dress yet. I like champange and burgandy as our colors. My fiance thinks we need a third color. I'm not sure if it would be too much. Any suggestions? email me at geoppner@hotmail.com.

Linda -- Tuesday, June 17 2003, 09:50 pm

I'm having a July wedding. The colors I chose are red (brides maids), gold (maid of honor) guys with black tux/red vest and tie, gold vest for best man. I feel that I need to accent the gold a little more since the bridemaids are not carrying flowers. My bouquet is red roses w/baby's breaths some roses are cream. I hope this will look good. I thought maybe I could add a little gold on the boutineers which are roses. What do you think? please email me at upll24a@aol.com

mel -- Wednesday, June 18 2003, 08:03 pm

I think a great way to pick wedding colors or schemes is to go to a florist and ask to see seasonal bouqets. I am having a fall wedding and couldn't decide on a color and finally had inspriation from my flowers. Also don't be so set on one or two colors, use that seasonal bouqet as an example and use a variety of colors that are coordinated. This not only allows for some felxibility but really accents the season. Hope this helps! If you have any questions email me @ mcfarr@aol.com

does anyone have any ideas for colors for a late summer wedding?

Kim -- Saturday, June 21 2003, 12:20 am

Misty,

I also am having a "late" summer wedding. I think its more fallish, but fall colors are more browns, oranges & earth tones, i tend to like the spring and summer colors, such as purple, peach, pastel greens and yellows...... it's your day, go with your favorites!!!

LaNay -- Saturday, June 21 2003, 03:58 pm

Hello all…My wedding is OCTOBER 18, 2003!!!

I’m undecided on colors for the wedding I have already picked out my dress it’s pure white. However I’m now working on the bridesmaids dresses and I can not decide on the color burgundy or bordeaux I really like the color bordeaux however my wedding is during the day and I don’t want it to look too dark how can I avoid this from happening? I needed a dark color because some of the bridesmaids are a little on the heavy side and I think this would compliment their bodies better

I’m also not sure what colors of flowers I would use to accent it. Please someone give me some suggestions

Shantel -- Saturday, June 21 2003, 05:07 pm

If you lke the bordeaux, go with that. Roses and lillies are all beautiful. Yellows or golds always works well with reds ( they are also fall colors). Good Luck

Rena -- Saturday, June 21 2003, 08:52 pm

Rena-There is nothing wrong with wearing white for your 2nd wedding. I'm getting married for the 2nd time next May. I haven't decided on my dress yet, but I think its old fashioned to think you aren't "worthy" of white anymore. As for your colors, I think its really your preference. I'm trying to decide between an ice blue & silver or mango & hot pink. I'm not sure that either of them are "spring" colors either.

Melissa Renee -- Tuesday, June 24 2003, 12:20 am

I am going to be getting married on November 27 of 2004. I am looking at having dark colors such as Navy, Hunter and a dark purple. My other choices include Navy, Dark Purple, and Deep Red or Deep Red, Hunter, and Platnum. If any one has any suggestions or thinks any of these would be better than the others, please e-mail me! Thanks MelissaMolleck@hotmail.com

I'm getting married October 15, 2004 and I need some advise on colors to use. First time getting married, it's not gonna be a huge wedding but a med. one. I really need so help with the colors. I feel I'm stuck.

Tallie -- Sunday, July 20 2003, 06:13 am

By the time I get married I will be 21, luckily I have found the man of my dreams ..and likewise I want to have the wedding of my dreams...not a huge, but a really nice wedding...I am getting married a week before Christmas and like you stated above it is going to be a winter themed wedding without the clashing, tacky Christmasy colors. Since my fiance likes red, I chose to go with a wine or berry color...but he wants red and white roses...does the variations of the reds clash..or is a red rose a classic symbol disregarding matching colors? Also, will silver match the white roses? Please help me plan the perfect wedding, email me back at babycuttlebugg@yahoo.com...any other feedback regarding a candlelight ceremony would also be appreciated.

michele -- Monday, July 21 2003, 05:31 pm

This response is for Martha...what kind of colors do you like? Do you want to be traditional? Rich, earthy tones are usually best (tradionally.) Burnt orange, maize, russet, rust, etc. I went for forest green , burgundy and cream for my oct. wedding.

I'm just as confused as everyone else on the above list. I am going to get married in JULY 2004. What are some good summer colors? Please help me I need some advise.

Laura Taylor Mark -- Saturday, August 2 2003, 06:51 am

Hi Ladies,

All of your color choices/combos sound wonderful. I especially like the 3 color combos. I'm a mixed media artist who also designs wedding invitations & stationery. Design elements of odd numbers are always appealing to the eye. I'm seeing a lot of red in the list here and navy/blue, also burgundy (accents could be pale plum/platinum) at least for the winter & fall weddings. I predict that silver, shiny or matte, will be the *hot* metallic accent again, with copper trailing behind (would be a great accent w/ burgundy & orange) Gold is making a comeback though I think it will be more *aged and vintage* looking. For Spring & Summer, I think the citrusy brights will still be going strong. I like the color combo of medium blue, mellow orange and sage green. Keeping colors in the same *temperature* is another safe way to go. Overall though you could just go with your faves - it is your day after all :)

Good luck! Laura laura@artcardsetc.com

I'm getting married Bali June 2004. My dress is somewhat formal considering my fiance refuses to wear a tux in the hot weather. Any ideas on his attire? I want the flowers to be extremely bright and tropical. Does anyone have any ideas on what flowers might work well, seeing that it is very difficult to work with florists that barely speak English and are 3/4 of the way around the world. Any hairstyles anyone has seen that incorporate flowers but will make my dress appear less formal would be of great help as well. Thank you. sshandrick@anadyspharma.com

My ideas for Autumn colors -- Monday, August 11 2003, 01:45 am

For my fellow Autumn brides (ours is Oct 2004), I suggest a palette of jewel-tones. (No need to stick to just two colors. Autumn is an extremely colorful time of year.) Make them deep, bright, or muted, whichever you like best. Pick one or two colors to start, then build. I started with antique gold, because I happen to look really good in that color. I think it's more important to base your colors on your own skin/hair/eyes than on the season or the time of day. After all, you will be surrounded by these colors all day! As accent colors, I chose dark amethyst and ruby red. (Ruby is my birthstone.) I also wanted emerald green, but decided I'd get plenty from the ivy and ferns. I got the idea for jewel tones because our wedding theme is "treasure," which is a metaphor for "cherish." I'm loading the decor with these colors, and sprinkling lots of colored glass gems and gold candles throughout. Best wishes and God's blessings for your weddings! :-D

Platnum and White

Happi -- Wednesday, August 13 2003, 02:32 pm

I just got engaged and most of the decisions are left up to me. The way I chose my colors already is from my ring. Since the bride's and grroms rings are platnum I'm going with platnum and White. And since Platnum is like a color that has silver with a hint of blue in it, it give him his color that he likes which is blue. Its pretty basic yet it'll b elegant and not too many colors to make things look crowded. We want a clean look. I'm also going to incorporate same color Smiley faces within the theme since thats a theme I so much as live by. My groom mainly just wants things to be contemporary yet elegant.

Toyia-pink goes great with plum. I know it sounds odd, but the pink accents the plum so well, it just looks very exquisite!! Or there's always a light yellow.

I'm planning a wedding for next year, red is my favorite and purple is his. At this moment we're not sure what colors to use. We need some ideas for dark colors accented with gold. I also need a theme besides Victorian. Thanks

Amanda -- Sunday, September 7 2003, 02:43 pm

Hey Frankie - I admire your boldness in color choices. My suggestion would be to use artificial flowers. It would even save you money and you have many more choices to go with for flowers, especially since you won't have to worry about a particular flower being in season. Good luck!

I am getting married Nov.2004 what are good colors for that season, My maid of honor is heavier than then the rest of the girls, what color is good and not make her look bad?

Candice -- Sunday, September 21 2003, 12:43 pm

I was married in May in an afternoon ceremony, I used pastel shades of blue and pink with white. The bouquets were hand-tied with silver ribbon and the effect was really nice. You can see my website at www.candicemcdonald.homestead.com , just click the wedding link on the side of the page. The pictures don't really do the flowers real justice though! My cake also had the pastel theme with other colors mixed in, all made with royal icing.

Please help! I'm a bridesmaid and the bride is letting us girls pick out what dress we want. We (8 bridesmaid's) vary in shape and size. The bride wants a formal tropical theme. She said pick 4 tropical colors so that two girls will be wearing the same. We've went eveywhere! Not one dress that we tried came in solid bright tropical colors. We're all under the age of 25 so, we don't have much of a background in wedding stuff. I've tried the internet and went to many stores in Michigan. If anyone knows of a website or dress designer that offers "flamboyant" colors, please let me know, thank you !

Purvi -- Friday, October 3 2003, 04:50 pm

Hi!

Our wedding is planned for early September 2004. I've been battling the color decision since we got engaged. We know for sure that we want the bridesmaids dresses to be navy or royal blue. I'm also thinking of doing a butterfly theme. Any ideas on colors for the flowers? The hall is mainly burgundy. But I'm not sure how burgundy flowers will look against dark blue dresses. I'm also thinkin of using silver as an accent color. I think silver ribbon is pretty. Any ideas are appreciated!

Thanks! Purvi

Deb -- Sunday, October 5 2003, 07:36 pm

Going to an evening, outdoor wedding in Miami in October. Would it be wrong to wear black?

Brandi -- Monday, October 6 2003, 02:03 pm

Please don't were black in Miami, even if it is an evening wedding and in October.

Silver is black's friend. You can wear something silver with black accents. You can even were black and white. But not all black. Although it's kind of hard to juggle the weather, the time of day, and the fact that the location is Miami... Silver & Black, and Black & (Winter) White are safe and CLASSIC bets.

You can also look at the colors of the wedding party. Try to find something close to those colors, with out making people think you are part of the wedding party.

Fashion designer, Brandi

HELLO EVERYONE,

I AM OPEN TO ANY IDEAS AND SUGGESTIONS FROM ANYONE. MY FIANCE AND I ARE HAVING OUR WEDDING JUNE 19,2004 AND I AM HAVING TROUBLE DECIDED ON COLORS (LIKE YOU GUYS). FIRST OF ALL, HE IS A CHIEF PETTY OFFICER OF THE US NAVY AND NO WE ARE NOT HAVING A MILITARY WEDDING, BUT HE WANTS TO WEAR HIS UNIFORM, WHICH I DON'T MIND. HE HAS A CHOICE OF THE WHITE ONE WITH GOLD BUTTONS, OR THE BLACK AND GOLD ONE. ALSO, HE WANTS HIS GROOMSMEN TO WEAR BLACK TUX. SO, IT IS VERY HARD FOR ME TO DECIDE ON "SUMMER" COLORS WITH BLACK TUX. MY PLANS FOR MY DRESS WILL BE OFF-WHITE AND MY COLORS THAT I LIKE FOR A SUMMER WEDDING IS ROSE/LAVENDER/ AND I CAN'T DECIDED ON THE THIRD COLOR. SO, IF YOU GUYS COULD RENDER ME ANY IDEAS ABOUT WHAT I'VE MENTIONED, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME @ffleming@uga.edu AND TITLE IT "WEDDING IDEAS". I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE THE HELP!!!!

THANKS!

junebug -- Sunday, November 2 2003, 12:12 pm

A good way to find colors would be to go to a hardware store and look in the paint department. The paint chip section has all the colors of the rainbow its easy to see what looks good and what you like when they are right in front of you. Hope this helps!

Shannon -- Wednesday, November 5 2003, 01:47 pm

Cherry - If you want to use fall like colors for your August wedding go for it! It's your day and whatever colors you decide to use will be gorgeous! There are so many different shades of fall "like" colors -- also, you could accent these colors with silver and/or ivory an lots of greens at the reception. In my opinion August is between summer and fall so do what you want and be confident in your decision. Do what makes you happy, not what others think you should do! Good luck!

Shannon -- Wednesday, November 5 2003, 01:56 pm

Deb - Going to an evening, outdoor wedding in Miami in October and you want to wear black? My response to this is -- What other color is there??? :-)Whether it's summer or winter, causal or formal... It's my opinion that you can't go wrong wearing black so go for it and look great!!

Kenya--I think that if you mix another lighter color with the plum it will be great.

Sarah -- Saturday, November 8 2003, 11:05 pm

Kenya--plum for July would be beautiful if paired with a lighter color--lavender, pearl, anything light would be great! Alison--I went to a spring wedding once that was like a taupe color paired with red, but it would also look beautiful with a pink--bright or dark pink...hope any of that helps:)

Dameeca -- Monday, November 10 2003, 03:50 pm

NICOLE,

I THINK CORAL IS A PRETTY COLOR AND THE SAGE GREEN OR ANOTHER NAME FOR THAT WOULD BE, CELEDON, WHICH IS A LIGHT SHADE GREEN. I THINK THAT WOULD LOOK REALLY GOOD. GOOD LUCK, I HOPE THAT HELPS.

Brandy -- Wednesday, November 12 2003, 11:49 am

I am getting married next november, outside on the beach. My fiancee loved the color navy. So I was thinking that my girls wear navy dresses holding white and baby blue flowers, and they guys would wear navy shirts and white rose boutineers. Then I of course and wearing white and my bouquet will be navy, baby blue, and white. Would this look ok?

Kenya -- Thursday, November 13 2003, 09:33 am

Sarah & Stacey I've got another color in mind now, how about apple red?? I saw it on the JCPenney website and it was so pretty. Please help me stop being SSOOOO indecisive!!

Stacey -- Thursday, November 13 2003, 03:08 pm

Kenya--I love red !! It just depends on if you want something really loud or something a little more mellow with the plum. The colors should represent your personality. Hope that helps !! Let me know what you choose :)

Stacey -- Thursday, November 13 2003, 03:12 pm

Brandy--I think that sounds beautiful !!It's almost like mine with the differrent tones of the same color. I think it's original to do it that way. Good luck :)

beckie -- Thursday, November 13 2003, 03:32 pm

I keep getting criticised for wanting the color red for my MAY wedding. Is this non-traditional. Is red a no no for MAy?

Tiffani -- Thursday, November 13 2003, 07:52 pm

Red is the color of blood!!! You might want to go with a dark maroon or something close instead of red!!! Just my opinion, of course!!!

Beck -- Friday, November 14 2003, 10:07 am

I never thought red was a pretty color for a wedding, but brother weddign was red and white and it was BEAUTIFUL. I wanted red for my wedding then, but I know can't because they had it. Its your wedding, choose what you like.. red is very pretty.

Kenya -- Friday, November 14 2003, 11:25 am

Beckie, if you want RED then go for it. I was being pretty wishy washy with my colors too but I'm going with Apple Red. It's still red but its not a bright red it kinda looks like a light wine/burgundy mix Thanks Stacey!!!

Sarah -- Friday, November 14 2003, 01:53 pm

Stephanie -- Monday, November 17 2003, 04:01 pm

I think black & white are gorgeous at weddings! Both my sisters did theirs in those colors and it turned out beautiful. I'm also doing black, silver and red. I love the contrast of a red rose bouquet against a white dress! Good luck!

Steph -- Monday, November 17 2003, 04:04 pm

My fiancee just told me he wants to wear yellow. I'm not so sure about this. If anyone has been to a wedding with yellow and black please let me know how it was and what they used. I'm very skeptical & we're having a hard time since it was originally going to be red, black & silver. How about red and a pale yellow? HELP! Thanks. stephie0730@hotmail.com

Erica -- Thursday, November 20 2003, 11:37 pm

any color is appropriate. :) i'm sure whatever you pick will be beautiful! i don't think colors like lavender, pink, yellow, or other spring colors should be limited to seasons...after all, it is YOUR wedding and you should like the color scheme. however, if you want to make your colors seem a little more toned down for the season, i find that an ivory or off white shade works because its not as "white" as say...white. good luck with the wedding!

Heather -- Friday, November 21 2003, 10:06 am

Sarah~ I am having a June wedding also. I too had a hard time picking out colors. I have chosen to do buttercup/yellow, with lilac and lavender as my accents. I saw a bouquet in a Bridal magazine that had these three colors in it and it was beautiful. Each made the other pop. You want to choose a color that is flattering to all your bridesmaids. Red is usually a good color for most people. Red roses look great against an all white dress. Even prettier against a diamond white or off white. Celedron, with corals, and yellows is also a fun combo for summer. Good Luck!

-- Saturday, November 22 2003, 08:49 pm

I think a light corla to pink color with yellow is really pretty, like the combo of some roses that you see

SRS -- Wednesday, November 26 2003, 06:10 pm

I am getting married in the late afternoon of June. The wedding will take place on the beach on a very tropical island. I've had in mind a light green/celadon because of my invitations and other accents I already have for the reception. However, because it is on the beach and under white drapery I feel I need a brighter color. I was thinking of coral but I'm not sure if this will look okay. I also like bright yellow orchids with red roses for an island theme. If I use these colors I won't be able to use the green and I have already delivered the invitations. I have my heart set on using orchids of some type. I'm open to any suggestions color wise that will go well with a very tropical themed wedding.

Also I need an idea as to what the groom and groomsman colours should be. I am wearing a white gown that was passed onto me by my sister who got married three years ago. Please help me with the colours.
