| Barb -- Monday, December 9 2002, 08:47 pm Best Man's speech toolkit...Wow. The jokes are very
offensive and the humour very dark. I would think twice
before using this page for any occasion.
WSG Webmaster -- Tuesday, December 10 2002, 02:55 pm I think the british sense of humor is usually a little more
twisted than our liking here in the USA. Any British brides
wish to comment about that?
Peppa -- Sunday, February 16 2003, 02:38 pm I wouldn't say 'twisted' - a little harsh; perhaps just a
little more sarcastic!
Jane Murphy -- Friday, March 28 2003, 07:15 pm Here's a cute idea on the subject:
When my friend got married, between every 3 or 4 songs,
the DJ would call a name from the guest list and they would
have o give an impromptu speech from their table. At first,
people were awkward but by the end of the evening (after the
champagne had been flowing a little while) people said some
really funny and memorable things. It was a good way to
include the whole reception in the fun.
Ann -- Thursday, July 31 2003, 04:09 pm Sounds like the American sense of humour is stuck in the
Victorian ages.
marianne kittinger -- Sunday, November 2 2003, 09:31 pm Is it customary for the maid of honor to give a speech?
Kitty -- Friday, February 20 2004, 09:55 am Marianne - I do not think that it is customary for a Maid of
Honor to give a speech, but I have been to a few weddings
recently where the Maid of Honor spoke. Perhaps it is
becoming a new tradition to have the Maid of Honor give a
speech. In the weddings I went to, the Maid of Honor gave
her speech right after the Best Man's. I think that it is a
really nice idea to allow the Maid of Honor this privilege;
she most likely knows the bride well and it acknowledges her
place of honor in the wedding. I would recommend it if your
Maid of Honor is willing.
Joanne -- Tuesday, March 23 2004, 01:54 pm I think that Kitty is right when she sz that the Maid of
Honor should say a speech as well...I mean we are just as
important as the best man are'nt we??
Amy from http://www.Poemstogo.tv -- Wednesday, March 24 2004, 08:56 pm Just wanted to let you know that I've done lots of speeches
given by the Maid of Honor to the Bride, so yes, everyone
seems to love to toast! Including the Best man :)
Kathy -- Thursday, April 22 2004, 09:13 am Anyone know the complete poem of "Something Borrowed,
Something Blue, something old, something new?"
Kathy -- Thursday, April 22 2004, 09:16 am Anyone know the complete poem of "Something Borrowed,
Something Blue, something old, something new?"
Laura -- Monday, April 26 2004, 11:56 am British humor as a rule isn't dark or harsh, but ironic
which can be taken as sarcasm. Many people don't appreciate
this form unless they've been exposed to it previously, but
it is a more thought provoking kind than the sometimes
obvious American sort.
On the Maid of Honor speech, it isn't traditionally a
custom probably from the era of women being seen, but not
really talking in public. It's nice to know that this
mentality is changing especially as Kitty mentioned, who
knows the bride better than the maid of honor? I'm
currently working on my toast for my best friend's wedding
this coming month and I'm hoping to be successful in
conveying my happiness for the couple while conveying some
wit. No pressure!
Laura -- Tuesday, April 27 2004, 01:07 pm something old, something new, something borrower, something
blue, and a lucky sixpence in her shoe....that's as far as i
know it.
Dave -- Monday, May 24 2004, 03:22 pm Thanks for all the great speaches. This is gonna get me
killed. LOL
Maggie -- Thursday, June 24 2004, 04:56 pm Anyone have any great speech ideas that are different and
funny without being rude?
welsha -- Wednesday, July 21 2004, 03:30 pm isn't it great when people turn a helpful website into an
international bash-a-thon to try and throw "loud and
obnoxious" at americans and "dry and twisted" and the
brit-brats? good luck to all your wedding speeches,
whichever form of engish they'll be given in.
Jessika -- Saturday, July 24 2004, 01:31 am I think it is retarded ,like a lot, that you have to pay to
get a little help with writers block
NJ -- Wednesday, July 28 2004, 07:14 pm does anyone know a REALLY good web site that offers free
bridesmaid speech examples that aren't lame? I'm dyin here.
JM -- Thursday, August 12 2004, 05:14 am Nice to see the maid of honour giving a speech, perhaps
they'll equal out the man bashing speeches with some woman
bashing even if it's not PC to do!
As for some of the moaning about the jokes and being stuck
in the dark ages...perhaps it's just that person hasn't got
enough friends to know what humour's about...
personally i loved some of the cracks, oh but then i am a
man and british! guess luck just isn't on my side ;)

activities...we want more than just drinking and dancing...a
Grand party to celebrate a wonderful couple which involves
everyone! Please help!
Jenean -- Friday, October 8 2004, 10:51 am What did you guys do at your reception for fun? Some folks
wants to do Karaoke. They sing and think it would be cool.
I didn't reply. Just smiled.
Jamie -- Tuesday, October 12 2004, 11:44 am I would say no to karaoke I attended a wedding like that and
it was funny at first but then it just got really
annoying.
Steph -- Tuesday, October 12 2004, 05:01 pm I need a good speech for the maid of honour to give!
Jody -- Monday, October 25 2004, 06:09 pm Your best bet is to tell a short story you know about the
bride or groom that could relate to their relationship or
marriage & things to come. i.e. I was my sisters MOH, I gave
a speech like:
When we were little my grandmother had asked BRIDES NAME to
go out and turn the water on for the lawn, she ran outside
but then came back in and asked grandma "hot or cold?" (I
got a little laugh from everyone, then went on) BRIDES NAME
you are starting a new life with GROOM and there are going
to be times that are "hot or cold".....
I went on w/ some sappy stuff about love & overcoming up &
downs & what not but the childhood story before hand
personalized the speech a little bit. Hope this idea helps!
Maddy -- Thursday, October 28 2004, 12:18 pm You can get examples for Maid of Honour, Best Man, Father of
Bride, Bride, Groom etc speeches at www.hitched.co.uk
David -- Wednesday, November 24 2004, 02:24 pm american sense of humour sucks
[]D [] []V[] []D [] []\[] -- Friday, December 3 2004, 03:35 pm ive got grape snapple in my bum
strawberry -- Saturday, December 11 2004, 12:32 am um.. I'd just like to say, why not have the maid of honor
give a speech? She's just as important as the best man isn't
she? And probably more important than any other women in the
bridal party, otherwise she wouldn't have been chosen as the
maid of honor. Every wedding i've been to, has had speeches
given by the maid of honor, I just that that was a given! Oh
well, guess I was wrong!
Tre -- Friday, January 7 2005, 12:24 pm To all you English People who think American sense of Humor
sucks. Hows this? Go see a dentist and have those crooked
brown cigarette stained teeth fixed. How's that? Pretty
funny Huh? Actually pretty true is more like it.
Gertrude -- Friday, January 7 2005, 08:13 pm I think you got a little off the topic. What do crooked
brown cigarette stained-teeth have to do with wedding
speeches? All of you people are dumb. The whole reason
that I accessed this site was to get information on wedding
speeches, not the differences between British and American
humor. Thanks for nothing.
Phoebe -- Friday, January 7 2005, 08:16 pm Amen to that sista!!! What started out as a quest to find
the perfect wedding speech turned into a cross-cultural
battleground with bad grammar to boot. Maybe you all should
have been riding the haha bus in elementary school. How's
that for American humor?!
Phoebe -- Friday, January 7 2005, 08:18 pm P.S. What kind of name is Strawberry?

at ebay. You may have to dig around a bit for the cheap
prices, but I got some great deals!
Royston Basil Dias -- Monday, March 21 2005, 07:12 pm Please send me a wedding speech since I am getting married
and I have to reply to the toast
Fran -- Thursday, March 24 2005, 10:25 pm What's the 'norm' here? Best Man toasts Groom? Maid of
Honour toasts Bride? I believe someone is supposed to toast
the bridesmaid/s and groomsmen also, right? Is someone
supposed to toast the parents? Is there a proper ediquette?
Otherwise just give me some ideas, lots of toasting going
on..
-- Tuesday, April 5 2005, 09:30 am Can someone direct me to a genuine free wedding speech site
!!
Ady -- Saturday, April 9 2005, 11:50 pm Need a free site for father of the groom speech asap.
Thanks.
Chelsey -- Tuesday, April 26 2005, 10:40 am I think you can have speeches anyway you want to have them.
Our best man is giving one and that's it. My stepdad
doesn't know when to stop talking, so we are doing one and
one only. Everyone is fine with it. If my groom decides he
wants to give one between now and our wedding, (May 13,2005)
he can. I do not want to be in front of people and talk so
we are doing things a little untraditional.
Amy of http://www.Poemstogo.tv -- Friday, April 29 2005, 09:31 am Here are some ideas for toasting:
Whether you are the bride herself of a participant,
situations are a lot looser these days , so many people are
giving toasts. I know for my wedding, my Mom gave us the
toast as I had lost my Father. Also, a dear friend of ours
who has known me since a little girl gave us a toast as he
was cutting the Challah. It was very nice.
I've done toasts from one sister to another, from the
Mother of the groom to her new daughter-in-law.
As I said, things are looser, so I would just go with my
feelings and best thoughts.
Hope that helps!
alex -- Sunday, June 12 2005, 07:06 pm I am the maid of honor in my sisters wedding and she is
riding my case about not doing a bad speech. I don't do well
talking in front of a large group of people and have no clue
where to start. I haven't been to a wedding in so like 11
years and i dont even remember it. I dont want to buy a
speech just some hints on what to say any ideas?
diana -- Monday, June 20 2005, 12:45 am GET A LIFE!
sheila -- Tuesday, June 28 2005, 10:28 pm alex - you could write a poem - it's easier to read a poem
to a crowd - you don't have to make as much eye contact -
and your sister will love that you created a poem in her
honor
clairie -- Friday, July 1 2005, 03:45 am how long should a MOH speech be? everyone has told me that
brief is best, but i'm not sure exactly how brief i should
be

Katie -- Thursday, July 7 2005, 01:28 pm I used to think that the maid of honor should give a speech,
but now it's my turn and I really don't want to. My sister
is getting married in 2 1/2 weeks and I have nothing to say.
I live 5 hours away from them and have a baby, so we don't
get home that much so I don't really know much about the
groom. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME WRITE SOMETHING!
Ginger -- Friday, July 15 2005, 02:18 pm There is a great free site that offers speeches that people
already gave. You can choose one, make some edits and
re-give it Many to choose from. Google "wedding speeches"
look for the one with UK in the address.

Good Luck!!
TSB -- Friday, August 19 2005, 10:25 am Here's my thought for everyone looking for "speech
examples". Forget them. Your speech doesn't have to sound
like the President prepared it. Speak from the heart - just
talk to everyone like they are your friends, not like they
are complete strangers, and your words will just flow.
Maybe jot down a few things on paper and say them once out
loud to yourself or a friend. Also, make it BRIEF as in 3-5
minutes. I was just at a wedding where about 6 people gave
speeches and all were about 15 minutes each. We didn't eat
dinner until about 9pm by the time they were all done!!!

"I think it is retarded ,like a lot, that you have to pay

Please do not use the word, "retarded" in this manner.
It shows a lack of sensitivity to the mentally retarded.
Jessika, I am sure that you can express yourself in other
ways.
